Gala Hills (b. 2001) is an artist from Devon and recently graduated from an MA in Painting at the Slade School of Art. Her work is steeped in domesticity, celebrating mundane rituals and drawing attention to the importance of aesthetics. Her academic research pivots around feminism, nonlinear philosophy, and situationism but allows her work to express this holistically rather than directly, amplifying colour and pattern to achieve sometimes naive paintings, prints, and drawings. In naïveté, she finds honest expressions of self, of creativity, and reclaiming femininity through a rejection of the establishment. Gala's paintings of hermitages express a semi-fictional history of outsiders and recluses, demonstrating interest in individual creativity and independence. In her collaborative performance works, she aspires to explore the barrier between society and the individual. Whilst working in seclusion, she runs towards aesthetics.
